Harriet Jacobs Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl written by herself

page37-56Chapter6-7
There was a rebellion against slavery, led by Nat Turner in Edenton. One day, many whites poured into Edenton from surrounding country with the military parade. At the same time, they intruded into slaves' house and robbed some stuff which was worthy to deprive. Some of them raped black women. By the way, the slaves in Edenton built a small church, but it was broken by their owners. Then the owners forced their slaves to go to another church which was for whites. In the church, the minister preeched to make the slaves obedient to the owners.Harriet gave birth to a girl when she was nineteen years old, but she had not got married. Her father's name was Mr. Sands. Dr. Flint, Harriet's owner, had jealousy to Mr. Sands, and he came to Harriet's house many times to find Mr.Sands. Dr. flint sent Harriet to his son's plantatin with her children getting anger for her dis obedience.

I am always irritated by the terrible behaviors of the owners to their slaves. I think they didn't have the right that they can hurt their slaves because of skin color. It was exactly human rights abuse. In such surrounding, she kept correct her own view of life. I really admired her.

I always don't know why some people have stereotype about stock. Some people is good, some people is bad, doesn't matter about skin color and stock. I've known some racist, but I hate racist.

Of course, I agree with you. In your summary, I was struck by the idea that the whites would want to use their religion to encourage their slaves to be obedient. At the same time, the slaves had their own church; I'm sure that in their church they learned a very different lesson, even though it was the same religion! Religion can be a force for change, or a force for repression.
